Surfing

Rincon is known as the “Surfing Capital of the Caribbean.” The surfing season only runs from November to March, so you’ll want to make sure and visit when the surf’s up. Surfing breaks are located off the beaches of Puntas (the “Fun Coast”), the point where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, and on the Sunset Coast. This is the time of year when you’ll watch world-class surfers challenge some of the most amazing waves you’ll ever see. In the summer months, the surf calms down but you’ll still find some smaller surfing waves depending on weather and ocean conditions. Even if you don’t want to “hang ten” with the experienced surfers, you’ll enjoy the action from the beach or the Lighthouse Park.

If you want to learn how to surf, there are lots of places where the waves are just right for beginners and intermediate surfers, and there are a number of surf schools available. If you already know how to ride the waves, you can rent surfboards and body board from the surf shops listed below.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

During the summer months, the surf along our the Rincón coast calms down and becomes a great place for snorkeling just offshore. The Tres Palmas Marine Reserve at Steps Beach is especially good — but you’ll find great snorkeling all along the Rincon beaches. The reefs at Tres Palmas Marine Reserve have extensive beds of Elkhorn Coral, which is a threatened species. Like any Marine Reserve, make sure you don’t touch the coral (it can be very sharp) or break coral formations with your flippers. Taking souvenirs of the coral is prohibited by Puerto Rico and Federal Law.

During surfing season from November to March, it is better to check with the dive shops and arrange a snorkel trip to some of the calmer offshore reefs or on Desecheo Island, which is 12 miles offshore.

Scuba diving in Rincon is the best in Puerto Rico due to our location close to great dive sites and Desecheo Island, a National Reserve Park 12 miles offshore that offers pristine diving conditions in a protected marine environment, with visibility up to 100 feet or more. Desecheo is known for its coral formations, reef fish, angels, jacks and even sharks.

Rincon is also near the dive sites of La Parguera, an easy 45-minute drive south of Rincon in Lajas. La Parguera is famous for its wall diving, which drops more than 120 feet. You’ll find large deep sea fish, dolphins, mahi-mahi, tuna, blue marlin and rare black coral.
